Kid Rooms that Wow

If you’ve got a little one or have one on the way, you may be overwhelmed by the slew of options out there for children’s rooms…or even disappointed. But it’s not all car beds and animated characters, you CAN have a nursery or kids room that embraces current trends and is stylish. See below for our favorite kids rooms that wow — from the calming nursery to rooms charged with whimsy and imagination for your small dreamer.

Nurseries Minus the Kitsch

When designing a nursery for your soon-to-be bundle of joy, think about a calming place that’s going to be both comfortable for baby and you during 3am feedings. The trends for nurseries are centered around neutral colors with stylish detailing — shapes, decorative paint techniques or even, a soft wallpapering or stenciling.

This is a great example of how decorative paint techniques can add dimension and airiness to a room. What makes the difference here is an unusual color palette for blue and white. Instead of a traditional white molding, neutral flooring and white furniture, this space is grounded with the sharp contrast of the black floors, a black glider, the fabulous black light fixture and black window moldings.

A modern take on the nursery, we love how this space’s distinct style still has a playfulness appropriate for a baby or toddler. The white stars stamped on the walls, the fabulous citrus chandelier and the coordinating rocking chair are adult-chic. The animal portraits, precious stuffed bears and toy elephant inject the kid into this kid’s room. With great design bones like these, this is a room a child could grow into by simply changing out the furniture and wall art.

Who says wallpaper or stenciled walls have to be heavy or a big design statement? The beauty here is in the subtly designed gray numbers. More than a plain Jane white wall but unlike a saturated bold wall, it’s not overpowering and still, light and airy.

Kids Rooms to Daydream In

Is it wrong that we want to play in here as adults? We just love the kids room in the HGTV 2014 Dream House in Lake Tahoe. With the high ceilings, big windows with lots of light and the bright reds and clean whites, this is the treehouse of our designer dreams.

A little Moonrise Kingdom summer at camp, a little Nordic, this room is incredibly stylish. We love the mountains (an easy thing to accomplish with your pro painters, you just tape off the lines) and the tree decal. This is an inexpensive treatment for a little boy or girls room who loves adventure. The thing we’re missing in this photo is storage. We suggest tall, clean white wall cabinets that sit flush with another wall and hide the kid clutter.
