From windows to paint to Energy Star appliances, the following are some fabulous green updates and eco-friendly home ideas that you can do to your home to promote a healthy environment — inside and outside!
Choose no- or low-VOC.
VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, and you don’t want those in your home as they add to indoor air pollution, which an EPA study has found can be even higher than outdoor no matter if you live in a city or in the country. Whether you are updating old furniture with a coat of paint or hiring us to redo your kitchen cabinets or paint your walls, “green” paint is the way to go and some of our favorite brands, like Sherwin-Williams, offer it. This pretty, vibrant, eco-friendly blue is called No-VOC Peacock Tail from Behr (if you’re curious who refinished this cool drawer set, click here).
Consider alternative materials.
There are some absolutely gorgeous eco-friendly materials available for your home remodel. From concrete countertops to sustainable bamboo (like the wall paneling above) to eco-friendly carpet, you have options that will suit the look and feel of your home. For carpet, look for natural, renewable fibers, such as sisal, seagrass, coir, organic cotton, jute, organic wool and bamboo.
Find green products.
All of the Native Trails products, like this artisan bathtub, are manufactured using recycled, natural and sustainable materials and processes. LOVE that! And while we’re on the subject of a beautiful bathroom…how about a recycled glass tile?
Not too shabby, huh? The above eco-friendly tile is City Lights South Beach tile by Daltile.
Make your appliances efficient.
Come on, people, this is such a no-brainer! If your dryer, dishwasher or refrigerator shuts down on you, make sure your next one has an Energy Star rating. Not only does it help the environment, it saves you dollars in your energy and water bills! This one is the Electrolux 4.2 Cu. Ft. Stackable Front-Load Washer (Mediterranean Blue) ENERGY STAR.
Upgrade your windows.
Lastly, don’t forget about those windows, which can let out all your cool or warm air and drive your energy costs through the roof. No bueno. We can’t get enough of these by Castle partner Marvin Windows and Doors who are all about energy-efficient windows for your home.
